Outdoor, patio and pool tiling

Outdoor tiling for patios, alfresco areas, verandahs and pool surrounds in Toowoomba 4350: slip ratings, falls, frost, warranty limits and price ranges.

Outdoor tiling covers patios, alfresco areas under a roof, front entries, steps and pool surrounds. The tiles need a suitable slip rating, the base needs a fall so water runs away from the house, and the adhesive and grout must be rated for outdoor use. Published Brisbane ranges for outdoor and patio tiling labour are $50 to $110 per sqm; a tiler in your area sends the quote and does the job, and this website takes no part in the work.

Reasons people tile outside

  • A plain concrete patio has stained or cracked and the owner wants a finished surface.
  • An alfresco area is being joined to the kitchen or living room at the same floor level.
  • Old outdoor tiles have gone slippery when wet.
  • Pool coping or surrounds are loose, cracked or lifting.
  • Front entry steps need a cleaner, safer finish.

Choosing outdoor tiles

Choice Where it suits Watch for
Textured porcelain Patios, alfresco, pool surrounds Check the slip rating on the box or data sheet
Thick outdoor pavers on pedestals Over a membrane on a roof deck or balcony Needs a designed base
Natural stone Pool surrounds, entries Sealing, and some stones mark or flake
Smooth indoor tiles Not recommended outside Slippery when wet

Slip resistance ratings come from testing to AS 4586, and suppliers list them as P or R ratings. Higher numbers mean more grip. Ask the tiler or supplier which rating suits a wet patio, a covered alfresco or a pool edge.

What a tiler will check on site

  1. The slab. Cracks, levels and whether it already falls away from the house.
  2. Drainage. Where water will go, and whether a strip drain is needed at the door.
  3. Door heights. Tiles plus adhesive can end up level with or above a door sill.
  4. Exposure. Covered or open to the sky, full sun or shade.
  5. What is under a timber verandah. Tiling over a timber deck or verandah is a structural question. Many timber decks are too flexible for tiles without a new base.

How outdoor tiling is done

  1. Surface cleaned, cracks assessed and patched, any loose old tiles removed.
  2. Falls checked and corrected with a screed if needed.
  3. Waterproofing where the area sits over a room or must keep water out of the slab.
  4. Tiles fixed with an outdoor rated flexible adhesive and full coverage, leaving movement joints.
  5. Outdoor grout, sealant in the movement joints, and sealing for natural stone.

Pools, paths and the Home Warranty Scheme

The wall and floor tiling licence class covers tiling swimming pools and spas. Pool work has a warranty catch worth knowing about. The QBCC list of insurable work says building or installing a pool is insurable, but renovating one is not listed. Paths and driveways done on their own are not covered either, and when they are part of a larger job they are only covered for non completion, not defects. Ask the tiler how a pool surround or path will be treated before you sign.

Pool surrounds

Pool surrounds take a beating from water, pool chemicals, sun and bare feet. The coping around the edge and the tiles beyond it should have a slip rating suited to wet barefoot areas, and the adhesive and grout must suit constant wetting. Any loose coping should be fixed properly, because a lifting edge is a trip hazard. If the pool fence or gate is near the work, make sure it is put back and latched at the end of each day.

What a careful tiler will not do

  • Use indoor tiles or indoor adhesive outside.
  • Lay tiles hard against the house with no movement joint.
  • Tile a patio that falls back towards the door.
  • Fix tiles to a springy timber deck without dealing with the base.
  • Lay tiles on a cold, frosty morning below the adhesive’s stated minimum temperature.

Toowoomba outdoor areas

Toowoomba gets slight frosts in winter, according to TAFE Queensland’s guide to local weather, and summers are warm, so outdoor tiles go through a wide temperature range. Movement joints and flexible adhesive matter more here than on a sheltered indoor floor. Dark tiles in full sun can get hot underfoot around a pool.

Front verandahs on older homes need care too. If your house is on the council’s register of heritage or neighbourhood character places, Toowoomba Regional Council says there may be extra requirements when building, so check before changing a street facing verandah. In growing areas such as Highfields, an alfresco job is often planned alongside new floor tiling inside, so both floors finish at the same height.

Frequently asked questions

What slip rating should outdoor tiles have?

It depends on the area. A covered alfresco that rarely gets wet needs less grip than an open patio or a pool edge used barefoot. Ratings come from AS 4586 testing and are shown on supplier data sheets as P or R ratings. Ask the supplier which rating they recommend for your area.

Can I tile over my existing concrete patio?

Usually, if the slab is sound, clean and falls away from the house. Cracks need assessing first, and any old sealer or paint has to be removed so the adhesive can bond. If the slab falls towards the door, it will need a screed to correct the fall before tiling.

Why do outdoor tiles crack or come loose?

Common causes are no movement joints, indoor adhesive used outside, poor adhesive coverage that lets water sit under the tile, and a slab that moves. Sun and cold nights make tiles expand and shrink every day, so outdoor work needs flexible products and joints.

Are pool renovations covered by the Home Warranty Scheme?

The QBCC lists building or installing a pool as insurable, but renovating a pool is not on its insurable list. That means retiling an existing pool surround may not have the same cover as a new pool. Check with the QBCC and the provider before signing.
